Can Diabetes Be Cured?

Type 2 Diabetes has for decades been known as a condition that is lifelong. It has been synonymous with lifelong pills and insulin shots. However, the last couple of years have seen a spike in service providers – doctors, nutritionists and tech start-ups talking about “diabetes reversal”. And yes, I am one of them.

What I really want you to understand more than anything else is what this “diabetes reversal” actually means. Most people think diabetes reversal refers to claims for some diabetes cure. However, diabetes reversal is just a term used for “diabetes remission“, i.e. managing type 2 diabetes without needing medication.

Type 2 Diabetes cannot be cured. And this is mainly because it is a “polygenic”, multi-factorial, “lifestyle” disorder. There are several lifestyle-related factors that together lead to type 2 diabetes. Your genetic history, food choices, activity levels, and stress levels are all factors that contribute. The reason why a cure seems tough is because these are related to your lifestyle. There is no one gene or one part of the body or one virus or bacteria that needs to be treated.

Since lifestyle is the problem, lifestyle is also the only solution.

But the meaning of “Diabetes Reversal” is unclear and often looked at as some form of cure.

So what should you do?

If you have type 2 diabetes or are at risk, you must address it with your lifestyle first. Before you get onto medication, give food and lifestyle one shot.

If you are already on medication, make getting off it your goal (especially if you’ve had diabetes for less than 5 years).

If you have had diabetes for longer than 10 years, your goal should be to stay on limited medication and curbing the long term complications related to diabetes.

Long story short, no matter where you are with your diabetes, there is a way of improving your health.
